Steves's Story
"There must be more..." is a phrase many people either vocalize or silently challenge themselves with. It challenged Steve and Barb Ulrich several times in their lives, with life-changing results.

Early in their marriage, after completing degrees in Architecture (Steve) and Medical Records (Barb), both felt "there must be more." Life as young professionals seemed surprisingly empty. Their search for an answer brought them to their first, and biggest, life-changing decision - to invite Jesus Christ into their hearts as personal Savior and Lord! Together they started this new, eternally directed, phase of their lives.

For the next 14-years they grew in knowledge and understanding of God through their business, church service, community service, and child-raising. Steve became a successful architect in Kelowna, British Columbia, while he and Barb raised their boys, Michael and Brad. Throughout this phase of life, the challenge was still calling...could there still be more?

Missionaries would come and go through their church and share experiences from foreign fields, stirring Steve and Barb's desire to experience missions in some way. In 1995, that desire led them to enroll in a Discipleship Training School with Youth With A Mission (YWAM). The next dramatic change in their life was about to unfold. Their time with YWAM included a field assignment to the Philippines and Thailand, where their world-view opened wide and they discovered the possibility of service in the mission field.

For Steve particularly, the urge to serve around the world with his architectural design skills was very strong. Was God actually calling ‘the family' into a life as missionaries? HE was! In 1998, Steve's architectural practice sold and the family moved to Colorado Springs where Steve began serving with Mission Builders International. The "void" inside was filled once again as their second life changing time began.

In September of 2000, Steve transitioned to Engineering Ministries International (eMi), a ministry with an expanded design capability. In 2002, the Ulrich family returned to Canada to be closer to family and to help start an eMi Canada office there. Steve is the Director of eMi Canada in Calgary, Alberta.

As Steve observes, "Serving the poor of the developing nations as a design professional has been, and continues to be, the most rewarding experience of my life. When you see orphans receive a 'home,' or watch illiterate children start school for the first time in their lives, or see the sick and dying ministered to in a new health clinic - my heart is captured forever by the sense of accomplishment that we have done something to help. This cannot be done in our own strength but in Jesus' name. It is a blessing now and it is also a blessing for eternity..."if you give even a cup of cold water to the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded." (Matt 10:42)
