Matt never had ambitions of going to Africa. He never had ambitions of working in missions. He was quite content to stay in Canada enjoying a bright future working for one of Canada’s leading structural engineering firms. So how did he end up at eMi in Uganda?
Matt first heard about Engineering Ministries International when a speaker came to his church in Toronto in 2012. He’d been longing for something more in his life, and eMi’s work and vision to mobilize design professionals to support Christian ministries in the developing world really resonated with him. Less than a year later, he was interning at eMi’s UK office, including the highlight of a project trip to Uganda. While Matt really enjoyed the experience, the people, the culture, and the country, the thought of returning to Uganda hadn’t crossed his mind until it was suggested by a colleague. Feeling God’s leading in the suggestion, he was back within a few months – this time volunteering in the eMi East Africa office in Uganda. He fell in love with what eMi does:
“I love how we are able to support our brothers and sisters in Christ by using our expertise to equip them to fulfill God's vision for their ministry. It is amazing to work with people who have competing priorities but are able to work together because they have a desire to serve and do excellent work. I love that we start our work day in a time of prayer and devotion. I love that we are intentional about investing in the lives of our interns, both professionally and spiritually, even though it can create more work for us. I love Uganda; the people are amazing. God has blessed me with an amazing community that feels like family. My life in Uganda is so full.”
Before his volunteer year was up, Matt had taken steps to join eMi full time as a staff structural engineer. Matt continues to be based in Kampala, Uganda, with his wife, Ashley, providing structural support to projects in the eMi East Africa office.
