Original Project Scope
In the 1970s, a group of Christian Ghanaian high school students banded together with a vision of improving the quality of life for Northern Ghanaians through whatever skills they could acquire.  Years later, their dream came true when they formed the Northern Empowerment Association (NEA) and, as qualified professionals, started using their training for the betterment of their communities.  In the 1980s, a group of Canadians caught the vision of this inspiring group and formed Ghana Rural Integrated Development (GRID) in support of it.

The Carpenter Hospital will be the culmination of years of work at improving health in this rural area of Northern Ghana.  GRID & NEA started by addressing the food supply needs of the poor, then constructed local clinics to attend to basic needs.  Currently, Canadian medical teams are deployed annually to treat ten thousand patients during their two week visits and to help provide training to local practitioners.  The next and ultimate step will be to provide a hospital capable of handling, on a continuous and self-sustaining basis, those needs that require hospitalization and access to fully trained medical personal.

The Carpenter Hospital will serve the needs of a population of several hundred thousand people scattered over 50 villages and towns and in the surrounding countryside.  The approximately 50-bed hospital will provide the services of both local and foreign specialists and will be designed with a view to expand in the future.
